64 pp. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. The 12th United States Army Air Force (USAAF) was established in 1942 to support the Allied invasion of French North Africa, codenamed Operation Torch. The 12th Air Force's activation plans were developed simultaneously with the invasion strategy, as the operation required a new organization to provide the necessary manpower and equipment. The 12th Air Force was activated on August 20, 1942 at Bolling AAF in Maryland, and Brigadier General Jimmy Doolittle took command on September 23, 1942. Before participating in the invasion, the 12th Air Force trained in England and then engaged in tactical operations in the Mediterranean for the remainder of the war.
